Art lovers staying within the city of Bonn are in for a treat, with a good selection of galleries and art museums dotted around the city centre. Particularly notable is the Bonn Art Museum, known locally as the Kunstmuseum Bonn, where many regional German paintings are displayed to their best advantage.

The Bonn Art Society was established in the early 1960s, with the intention of creating an environment for modern art and artists. Apart from exhibitions, the society employs symposiums, video screenings, talks and discussion groups to stimulate the artistic interest of local residents. There is a library full of art books close to the exposition area. A unique feature is that the art can be hired for a period of up to two months for just a nominal fee.

The Bonn Art Museum is a true highlight within the local art scene and home to an excellent collection of 20th-century paintings, many of which have been created by notable Rhenish artists and expressionists, such as August Macke. The museum itself is housed within a postmodern building and offers a well-lit, spacious interior.

An important cultural museum and exhibition space within the city of Bonn, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany hosts many temporary exhibitions each year. The permanent collection includes a number of impressive Egyptian artefacts and art works, and also many German paintings and other pieces of regional significance, which clearly document the country's history of art. The museum can be found within the Kessenich district and also features various events, such as concerts and well-supported film screenings.

The Women's Museum is a highlight for art fans from around the world, and is to be found in Art Square. As can be gleaned from the name, it specialises entirely on works produced by female scientists and artists. Most of the displays focus on modern art, but there are occasional exhibitions on history and folklore. The Women's Museum is known locally in Bonn as the Frauenmuseum and is also home to a photo and media collection, as well as details on art history. Readings, lectures, musical recitals and drama plays are staged regularly as well.

Bonn Art Galleries: Regional Museum of the Rhine (Rheinisches Landesmuseum) - Colmanstrasse 14-16, Bonn, D-53115, Germany, DE

Established in 1820, the Regional Museum of the Rhine region is conveniently centrally located in Bonn. Displays and records from different periods (from the Stone Age to the present) are on show, as well as some from Rhenish times gone by. The wide-ranging collection includes a range of Roman soldiers' tombstones, a 50,000-year-old Neanderthal cranium, plus the massive stone altar of the Hercules Saxanus from the Brohltal. The collections of art works include paintings by A Van Dyck, Barthel Bruyn and Rubens. There is also a section focusing solely on modern Rhenish art.
