The Bonn Museum Mile (Museumsmeile) stretches for several kilometres from the Südstadt to Bad Godesberg.

Here you can find several of Bonn's finest museums, within easy reach of each other.

One of the city's most important museums, the City Museum, known locally as the Stadtmuseum, clearly documents the development and history of the city itself. Housed within the City Hall and featuring themed rooms, expect to see paintings, photographs, documents, artefacts, period furnishings and various local antiquities.

The Bonn House of Nature is home to stuffed animals from the local woods, such as foxes, magpies and badgers. The displays of mushrooms, timber and bees are also attention-grabbing. Another thrilling feature is the ancient slice of wood from the Napoleon elm tree. This piece stems from an elm tree, which was planted in Napoleon's year of birth in the Kölnstrasse, but fell victim to the axe in 1977. To round off the visit, a track leads through the little herbal garden at the back the house.

Bonn Museums: Beuel Homeland Museum (Heimatmuseum Beuel) - Steinerstrasse 34-36, Bonn, D-53225, Germany, DE

This museum was privately established in the mid-1980s, in the oldest half-timbered house in Beuel, and entirely focuses on local history. Chronicling Beuel's historical development, exhibits range from the Stone Age to today. Various rooms exemplify the typical trades for Beuel, like sea transport, fishing, laundry and traditional crafts. A one-man bunker can be seen in the charming central square as well as a 500kg shell, which blew up in the city in WWII.

Bonn Museums: German Museum of Bonn (Deutsches Museum Bonn) - Ahrstrasse 45, Bonn, D-53175, Germany, DE

The German Museum of Bonn is located within the Plittersdorf area of Bonn and along the Ahrstrasse, being founded in 1995. Home to more than 100 exhibits documenting the advancement of technologies, research and science over the past six decades, highlights include a futuristic-looking monorail train, which is parked at the entrance, together with displays about Noble-prize discoveries, animations, touch-screen computers, hands-on items, and a popular gift shop, where you can purchase your very own scientific experiments.
